Poetry Out Loud Image

The Ohio Arts Council is pleased to announce that Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation contest for high school students, will be available throughout Ohio in 2014-15. Students who participate in the contest will memorize and perform classical and contemporary poetry. This exciting program is celebrating its 10th anniversary of inspiring students and helping them master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that begins at the classroom level. Teachers organize contests with one class or can involve a whole school. Winners from each participating school will advance to the state finals to be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 in the Lincoln Theatre, 769 East Long Street, Columbus, Ohio, 43203. The state finals are free and open to the public.

All school champions are invited to attend a free afternoon workshop to prepare them to compete in the state finals, to be held this year on Saturday, February 21, 2015, in the Riffe Gallery. Click here for more information about our workshops.

The winner at the state level will receive $300 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. Two runners-up will receive a cash prize for themselves and for their school libraries. Additionally, a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is given annually at the National Finals, including a $20,000 cash prize for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion. The National Finals will be held in Washington, DC, April 27-29, 2015.
