The Ohio Arts Council is pleased to announce that Poetry Out Loud, a national recitation contest for high school students, will be available throughout Ohio in 2015-16. Students who participate in the contest will memorize and perform classical and contemporary poetry. This exciting program just celebrated its 10th anniversary of inspiring students and helping them master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that begins at the classroom level. Teachers register each year with the Ohio Arts Council and organize contests with one class, several classes or a whole school. The contests, all workshops and all program materials are free. The Ohio Arts Council also provides the services of a project coordinator. Winners from each participating school are invited to compete in a regional semi-final contest in Columbus, Cleveland or Dayton, in early March 2016. The top scoring students from each semi-final will advance to the state finals to be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio. Semi-finals and the state finals are free and open to the public.

The winner at the state level will receive $300 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. Two runners-up will receive a cash prize for themselves and for their school libraries. Additionally, a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is given annually at the National Finals, including a $20,000 cash prize for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion. The National Finals will be held in Washington, DC, May 2-4, 2016.
